Delicious Poison

By Bonnie McMillan

Most everyone has at least one.
Of course it’s worse
when it’s your first.

The sudden fall into crazy love,
the wolf in sheep’s clothing,
the wonderful smell of him
of lust, chemistry.

The delicious promises,
the believable lies.

The waiting on the shelf
while he is doing
God knows what.

The weeks of sorrow and heartbreak,
the sweet returns
full of new promises.

When will I learn?
How many repeats?

Cry me a river
I cried a river over you.

Then something…luck, grace,
Maturity?
a guardian angel
helped me walk away.
